Jalapeno Pickled Eggs don’t really take that long to prepare (about fifteen minutes), but the days that you have to wait to enjoy them may make some pickled food lovers salivate for the whole time gap between bottling and eating the spicy snack.
What You’ll Need to Make Them
The first thing you want to do is see if you can find yourself a storage jar. These are the ones that have the seals on them that your grandma used to store different foods like fruits, jellies, and seasonings inside of for long periods of time. You’re going to need a big one, depending on whether or not eighteen eggs is enough or if you’ll want to prepare more. If you don’t have a good jar with the air tight seal on it, improvise. Use one of those large pickle jars after cleaning it thoroughly, and it will suffice.
Next, boil your eggs, and when they’re done peel each one. At this point, some folks poke a hole in every egg with a toothpick so that the flavor is stronger after they marinate, but this is optional. Whichever you decide to do, set all eighteen of them to the side. You will come back to these later.
Now get together all the rest of your ingredients. You’ll need two cups of white vinegar (what brand you get is up to you) and a small onion. Go ahead and slice up the onion and put it in a pot with the vinegar.
Find one and a half teaspoons each of mustard seeds, dill seeds, and black pepper. Mix all three of these ingredients into the pot with the onion and vinegar. Then, add to everything six cloves of garlic and an eight ounce can of whole jalapeno peppers. If you want to get the ones with the carrots in them, that’s fine.
All you have to do now is bring everything to a boil. If you want to, add four to six splashes of your favorite hot sauce for extra kick. This is completely optional – many folks think that leaving it out is fine since the eggs will already be very spicy without any additional heat. While the contents of the pot are heating up, put your eggs in the jar if you haven’t already. When it has come to a boil, carefully pour the eye-tearing mixture into the jar onto the pre-boiled eggs. Add some hot water to it if the liquid is not enough to fill up the jar.
How Long Before You Can Eat Your Spicy Treats?
All you have to do now is close the jar and let the eggs marinate for a week. They should be stored in the refrigerator.
Anything that’s pickled is considered by many to be an acquired taste, but those who love this kind of appetizer can’t get enough. If you like the ones that you can buy in the store (which are kind of expensive) then you’ll love saving some money by preparing them on your own.
